WOMAN’S WORK: THE HOUSEWORK BLUES
No matter how efficiently it is organized, housework retains some unattractive features. I feel certain that this fact accounts, at least in part, for the headaches from which housewives frequently suffer.
Here are some suggestions for minimizing the worst features of housework:
-
Try to get a day off, or part of a day off, every week. It is important to have time off from one’s job. A work week of only five or six days is impossible for most housewives, but women can usually arrange for a free morning or afternoon. Ideally, this should come at the same time every week, but preferably not over the weekend, when the family should be together. Do something that is a complete change; go to a movie or a church or club meeting or visit a friend.
-
Arrange to get some rest during each day. You will feel better physically and emotionally, and be able to accomplish more in less time, if you take a complete break both morning and afternoon. Try to make them fairly long ones, but take at least two 15-minute periods to rest and relax, with your feet up.
-
Organize your housework so as to break its monotony. Many chores must be attended to every day, but it is usually possible to put others on a bi-weekly or even a weekly basis.
